Two ways to score, one way to practise

Season points come from two places. Everything else on the site is for getting better at it.

Season puzzles

60 minutes apart

A fixed catalogue of 120 puzzles for the whole season, and no more will be made. Take one, and it is yours alone for an hour — nobody else can even see it. Worth 10 to 25 points depending on difficulty.

The competition

Every 3 hours

Three puzzles — Easy, Medium, Hard — the same for everyone, open to everyone at once. Worth 1, 2 and 3 points, each scored on its own. Solve one, two or all three.

Practice

Whenever you like

Unlimited puzzles, unlimited mistakes, unlimited hints, no points. It costs you nothing and it never touches your cooldown.

Built so the maths is checkable

A prize product only works if players believe the numbers. Here is what that belief rests on.

Your share is arithmetic, not discretion

At the end of a season the pool is divided between competitors in proportion to the points they earned. Your points over everyone's points, times the pool. That is the whole formula, and it is on the site before you play.

One puzzle, one player

A season puzzle is reserved to you for an hour by a single conditional write in the database. Two people cannot both win the race for it, however close the timing.

Exactly one solution, proved

Every puzzle is generated fresh for its season and machine-verified to have a single solution before it appears. No ambiguity, no disputed answers.

Answers stay on the server

The solution is never sent to your browser. Every digit you type is checked by us — which is also how mistakes are counted honestly.

The same limits for everybody

Two free hints and three mistakes on every competitive puzzle. They cannot be bought, earned, extended, or refilled by watching an advertisement. Not by anyone.

Bots get caught

Solving patterns are scored for the things people do and scripts do not. Suspicious runs are held and reviewed by a person before anything is paid.

What each difficulty is worth

Difficulty is not guessed from the number of givens — every puzzle is solved by a technique-aware rater before it goes on the board. Season 1's values are below; a future season can price them differently.

TierTypicallyTechniques neededSeason puzzleCompetition
Easy 42 givens Singles only 10 1
Medium 34 givens Locked candidates, naked pairs 15 2
Hard 29 givens Hidden pairs, triples, X-wing 20 3
Very Hard 24 givens Chains and beyond 25

Season 1 is 300 Easy, 300 Medium, 300 Hard and 100 Very Hard — 1,000 puzzles carrying 16,000 points in total. The most a single competition round can pay is 6 points.

The board is open right now

120 season puzzles are unreserved, and a competition round is open to everyone.
